Pseudo-Pseudohistorical Violence

This is a working title, and may change in the future.

Pseudo-Pseudohistorical Violence is a hack of Luke Gearing’s Violence which expands on the “pseudohistorical violence” rules for applying the Violence framework to fantasy games. This includes rules for magic, a class-like background framework, rules for encumbrance, and so on. Also included are guidelines on injuries, and spots to “port in” systems from other rulesets.

The main goals of the project are:

  • Do not eliminate the harshness and brutality of Violence’s combat. Even if players are a little more fantastic than the standard characters Luke Gearing envisioned, every combat should be a potentially lethal risk.
  • Emulate the fantasy adventurer genre, while not locking players into specific roles or classes (wizards may be incentivized to use daggers and shortswords, but they aren’t required to!)
  • Thread the needle between keeping mechanics diegetic while also being sure to have forms of rules, procedures, and guidelines that can be used as a basis for adjudicating the game.

This is a work-in-progress, so expect to see more things added! A compiled word doc ashcan version is hopefully forthcoming (though not for a while).
