Alternative Holy Magic for Dolmenwood's Pluritine Church
Alternative Holy Magic for Dolmenwood's Pluritine Church
Prelude
I swear this isn’t supposed to be a Luke Gearing fan blog. Also, this is at least nominally related to pseudo-pseudohistorical violence so I can pretend I am making progress on a current project instead of starting a new one.
Basically required reading:
Luke Gearing's Grand Unified Theory of Magic and Religion
Very highly suggested reading:
Elmcat's Kill Clerics Become Warlocks
Dododecahedron's Classless Clerics
I found all three of these blog posts incredibly inspiring in the matter of “fixing” clerics. I have never been satisfied with the way clerics work as a class—much has been written about this, especially in posts from Prismatic Wastelands’s Cleric Blog Bandwagon—but invoking the power of a deity should not work the same as a wizard casts spells.
I am also just a sucker for bespoke and unique magic systems, I think having bespoke forms of supernatural powers can really make magic feel more magical. My dream game would have clerics and witches, vancian magicians, Ars Magica magi, and ritual spells from Wolves Upon the Coast. Would that all make sense to cram into one system? Hell no. But I can dream :)
So below I have stolen taken heavy inspiration from Luke Gearings GUToMaR and applied it to the Pluritine Church from Dolmenwood.
Praying to the Saints of the Pluritine Church
Information on each of these specific saints and their miracles are given in the Dolmenwood Player’s Guide under “Holy Magic”.
The One True God incredibly rarely answers direct prayers. Instead, aid is invoked by praying to the Saints.
Invoking a saint requires that the devotee hold out a holy symbol and pray for the saint’s aid. Usually, scripture describing the saint’s miracle is quoted. A saint cannot be invoked if the devotee does not know the details of the saint’s miracle (got to go to bible school kids!). Also, invocations automatically fail if the devotee has not attended a sermon in the last week or have not prayed to a saint today.
Roll 1d4 if your character has attended or led a sermon in the last week.
Roll an additional 1d4 if your character is observing the 10% tithe.
For each of the following that applies, increase the lowest die by one step (d4-d6-d8-d10-d12-d20)
- You are an ordained priest of the Pluritine Church (this also requires forsaking edged weapons)
- You are on a pilgrimage to or are currently at a holy site
- You or your request fall under the patronage of the saint you are invoking
- You have taken a vow of poverty
On a rebuke, future requests to the same saint fail until the character makes a penance. This can include donating to the church, doing some other service for the church, or some other significant act. Requests to other saints are made with -1d6 on the roll.
On being ignored, future requests to the same saint fail until the character can attend a sermon, spend several hours cloistered and praying, or spend several hours proselytizing to the public. Requests to other saints are made with a -1d4 on the roll.
Results:
2: Rebuked! A minor malady affects the character. A save or attack gets a penalty, weather worsens, or something else.
3-5: Ignored.
6-8: Minor, indirect aid. A bonus to a save or attack roll, a minor lucky break, or similar.
9-11: Invoke the saint’s miracle.
12+: Saint’s miracle with maximum effect, or an effect above and beyond.
